2012 Jim Doty Memorial Mile Swim a success!

June 16, 2012 by greg

Great time this morning at the Jim Doty Memorial Mile Swim!

Nice weather, but very windy.  There were white caps, 2 foot chop and a head wind for the 2nd half of the swim.

I told everyone it was a “long mile”.  Turns out the course was 1.3 miles!  We promise to shorten the swim to exactly 1-mile next year. For a point of reference,  the turn should have been in front of the radio tower.

Wayland One (and Three) Mile Swim

April 26, 2012 by greg

If you have registered for the 2012 BLS and you still need to do a qualifying swim, the Wayland Three Mile Swim on June 24th is the swim for you.  For the rest of you, this is a perfect “warm-up swim” to get ready of the 8-mile BLS.  The registration fee is 100% deductable.  The money raised goes to support the Wayland Community Pool.  If you don’t want to do the 3-mile swim there is a 1-mile swim.  Both should have some good competition.  Event starts at 8:00AM at the Wayland town beach on Lake Cochituate.

The Boston Light Swim has been seen from space!

The Boston Light Swim has been seen from space!  Photographed by a satellite anyways and placed on Google Maps!  The image is of last years finish area at the L Street Bathhouse.  You can even see two of the organizers, Thomas between the tents and Carter in the lower right walking up from the water.  How cool is that?!?!

Jim Doty: The Passing of an Open-Water Legend

April 21, 2012 by greg

Many of you have heard the sad news already.  James J. Doty passed away early Monday morning on April 17, 2012.  He was surrounded by his family.

Jim is the one responsible for bringing back the Boston Light Swim in the mid-1970s.  Jim was an accomplished open-water swimmer and if you can think of a swim in the New England area chances are Jim has swum it.  He was also dedicated to promoting clean waters in the area and formed the New England Marathon Swimming Association (NEMSA) in part to further the cause.

There are tributes to Jim showing up everywhere.   Steve Munatones wrote a nice one on his open-water swimming site.  If you are interested in learning more about Jim Doty and his accomplishments there is a good book by Robert McCormack titled:   The Jim Doty Story: Accounts of Some of the Marathon Swims of a Great Boston Swimmer.

The 2012 Boston Light Swim and the organization’s accomplishments will be dedicated to Jim’s memory.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to Jim and his family.

Donate and win a guaranteed spot in the 2012 BLS

September 5, 2011 by greg

As you all know it can be difficult to get a spot in the Boston Light Swim. We are offering a guaranteed spot in the 2012 Boston Light Swim to the person who donates the largest amount to “In Search of Memphre”. Three of the BLS organizers: Jen Dutton, Elaine Howley, and myself are swimming 26-miles on September 10th from Newport Vermont across the border to Megog Canada. We will undertake this adventure swim with 6 others. It will be the 1st time in over ten years that swimmers have been allowed to cross the border and it will be on the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

The donations are to aid IROC, a non-profit organization that helps promote health and fitness in the Northern Kingdom of Vermont. IROC organizes the annual Kingdom swim weekend in which many of you have participated.

Now back to the guaranteed spot. The person who donates the most in the name of Jen, Elaine or myself will be offered a spot in the 2012 BLS. That person will need to be qualified and pay the registration fee. If they do not want the spot or they are not qualified the spot will be offer to the person who has made the 2nd highest donation and so on….. There is a chance of getting the spot even with a small donation!

So please donate and spread the word. The link to donate is below.

More info on the adventure, the swimmers and the cause can be found on the web site.

We will be starting the adventure swim at midnight this Friday and swimming through Saturday.

Finish Line Portraits

August 13, 2011 by Web

We tried something new this year at the finish and had each solo swimmer and team stand in front of a simple white sheet immediately after finishing for a full length portrait. Keep an eye out for these when they get posted, they should be a lot of fun with plenty of emotion on display.

Along with these we’ll put up a gallery of finishing shots and a few taking in the scene. If you have any from out on the water and are willing to share, please do send us a link to your web album and we’ll include it on our 2011 photos page.
